<image:title>About - About</image:title>
<image:caption>I’m a native San Franciscan who calls the Sunset District home. I’m a lifelong dabbler in arts and crafts with a particular focus on sewing. In response to the Covid-19 pandemic, I started sewing cotton face coverings for friends and family. This is a space to share my preferred methods and sources for making my favorite style of mask, as well as care and wearing instructions, and perhaps other projects in the future.</image:caption>

<image:title>Masks - How to Make and Care for 3D Face Masks</image:title>
<image:caption>I started sewing cloth face coverings in March 2020 in response to the pandemic. After trying numerous patterns, I discovered the “3D” mask and it quickly became my favorite to wear and make. In the process of making hundreds of 3D masks, I’ve developed my own construction methods to share on this site. Besides my tutorials, there is also information on my favorite sources for fabrics, elastics, and other notions; tips on fabric selection; care instructions; and other pointers for making masks and keeping them looking great. Fabric face coverings are not medical devices and I make no claims as to their efficacy for any purpose. Please consult CDC, WHO, or your local health officer’s guidelines for more information.</image:caption>

<image:title>Masks - About the 3D Mask</image:title>
<image:caption>What’s so special about the 3D mask? Let me count the ways... Its shape pushes out away from the face, so you don’t get a mouthful of fabric when you try to talk. It doesn’t press against your nose and it stays up with very little tension on the ear loops. Its construction is a bit like a box pleat, so there’s a little play in the fabric and it moves with your jaw during normal speech. I can wear it comfortably without having to adjust it or pull it up over my nose. And it doesn’t come up too high under my eyes or dig into my neck, either. It basically addresses all my complaints about the numerous other styles I tried and disliked. It’s my Goldilocks mask. If you are double-masking, this style fits well over disposable masks. Click here to see how I shape a surgical mask to wear as a filter. If you find masks uncomfortable to wear, give this style a try.</image:caption>

<image:title>Masks - Octagon Method - Octagon method</image:title>
<image:caption>Though I prefer the ease of the Rectangle method, there are times I like to sew the octagon shape to eliminate bulk, especially in kids’ sized masks. Instead of cutting the octagon shape before sewing, I trace the stitching line onto the lining to eliminate the guesswork of where to stitch and especially where to pivot at the angles. Plus, it’s more stable to sew across the corners before the fabric is trimmed, eliminating distortion and stretched out seams on the diagonals. Tutorial coming soon.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Your mask should now have a boat shape. These dimensions result in a mask that has a flattish dome at the front of the mask. If you have a narrower face or prefer a pointier look, you can adjust the folds at this stage. With practice, you can skip the pins/clips and simply fold up the flaps while at the sewing machine.</image:caption>

<image:title>Masks - Care & Troubleshooting - Washing and Drying</image:title>
<image:caption>Masks should be washed frequently. I wash after every wear, no matter how brief. They can be machine washed (a mesh laundry bag is useful for this) but for best results, hand wash and reshape before air drying. I wash in unscented laundry soap in a sink or basin and rinse well. Reshape the mask while wet. First re-establish the horizontal creases by pulling taut from corner to corner on both the top and bottom of the mask. Then fold the mask in half and adjust the folds to the desired shape. Blot the reshaped mask in a towel, then hang by the earloops or lay flat to dry.</image:caption>

<image:title>Masks - Care & Troubleshooting - Ironing</image:title>
<image:caption>I often like to iron my masks after washing to keep them crisp so they hold their shape away from the face. To do this, grasp the mask in the top corners in the folds to pull taut along the horizontal crease. Iron along the crease and all the way across the middle. Repeat on the other side. This resets the creases and also presses the center. If the sides are wrinkled, hang the middle of the mask off the corner of the ironing board and press. Do not iron the elastic.</image:caption>

<image:title>Masks - Care & Troubleshooting - Replacing adjusters</image:title>
<image:caption>Pulled a little too hard on your slide adjuster? If you still have it, you can pull the elastic back through it by looping the elastic over a twist tie folded in half. Push the ends of the twist tie through the larger hole of the adjuster and pull the elastic through. If you lost the adjuster, you could try the same technique with a craft bead instead, though it might not grip as well. Or simply tie an overhand knot in the elastic. Leave it loosely tied until you put on the mask, then tighten to the right fit.</image:caption>
